Arnhem Land

Arnhem Land, situated in the remote north-eastern corner of the Northern Territory, Australia, is a vast and culturally rich region that unfolds a tapestry of unique landscapes and indigenous traditions. Spanning over 97,000 square kilometres, this area is known for its pristine wilderness, ancient rock art, and the rich cultural heritage of the Yolŋu people, who have inhabited the land for thousands of years.

The landscape of Arnhem Land is diverse, ranging from rugged coastlines and savannah woodlands to lush rainforests and meandering rivers. This remote wilderness is teeming with a variety of flora and fauna, offering a haven for nature enthusiasts and those seeking an immersive connection with the natural world.

One of the highlights of Arnhem Land is its extensive collection of Aboriginal rock art sites, some dating back tens of thousands of years. These ancient artworks provide a captivating glimpse into the cultural and spiritual beliefs of the Yolŋu people, showcasing intricate depictions of Dreamtime stories, ancestral figures, and the region's vibrant biodiversity.

Access to Arnhem Land is restricted, requiring permission from traditional landowners, contributing to the preservation of its pristine landscapes and cultural significance. Visitors fortunate enough to explore this region gain insights into the traditional practices, ceremonies, and daily life of the Yolŋu people.

Arnhem Land stands as a testament to the resilience of indigenous cultures and the importance of preserving both natural and cultural heritage. For those seeking a profound and authentic Australian experience, Arnhem Land offers a journey into the heart of Australia's ancient and living history.

Tours

Brookes Australia Tours is one of the very few selected professional tour operators to be granted commercial permits to conduct Arnhem Land tours via 4WD vehicles. Being such a large expanse of land, we only concentrate on the Western side of Arnhem Land as other remote destinations must be reached by light aircraft, which we can also arrange for you.

On all of our 4WD Arnhem Land tours we depart Kakadu driving beneath the towering escarpment to the East Alligator River, the natural border to Arnhem Land. We engage 4WD, for the crocodile inhabited river and with special permission from the traditional owners we visit a small Aboriginal community in West Arnhem Land known as Oenpelli.

At Oenpelli we meet Aboriginal artists and weavers, watch them at work and you can purchase some genuine Aboriginal art. Later we join an Aboriginal guided tour to a nearby ancient rock art site, dated in excess of 20,000 years.

This land is one of the very few remaining unspoiled areas of the world where you find an untouched landscape. Its small population is predominantly indigenous and traditional Aboriginal culture remains largely intact. The didgeridoo originated in Arnhem Land, and the area is also world-renowned for its distinctive, authentic Aboriginal art.

Arnhem Land is one of the best fishing destinations in the world, largely due to its seldom-fished waters. Cruise inland on a tidal estuary in search of the massive barramundi or if you want to extend the Arnhem Land experience, talk to us about combining it with the world-famous Mt Borradaile Safari lodge. We can drop you off at the Lodge via 4WD or light aircraft and give you the opportunity to explore 50,000-year-old rock art interpreted by knowledgeable guides at Mt Borradaile. This is a true nature experience that won’t disappoint.

Whilst at Mt Borradaile you will enjoy fine meals and accommodation in deluxe permanent cabins with ensuite. You will experience untouched waterways, native woodlands, and amazing displays of birdlife and Aboriginal culture right outside your door.
